Radio Zon’s Antoon San A Jang passes

PARAMARIBO–Suriname mourns Antoon Sang A Jang (60), musician and director of Radio Zon. San A Jang passed away Wednesday night. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

San Jang was well respected in cultural circles in Suriname. Before starting Radio Zon, he owned and ran his own music studio, Ventu Studios, and stood out as a professional of principle who believed in the intellectual rights of artists.  At Radio Zon he showed his appreciation for ingenuity, choosing to not follow the beaten path but rather present a diversity of music styles to play on the air.

DevSur had pleasant dealings with him as recent as a few months ago, when he approached us for a mutually beneficial relationship. The station’s English newscast is presented daily to our website, which San A Jang said he used to follow with “professional appreciation.”

He had then just returned from The Netherlands where he had received cancer treatment. It would be in vain. Radio Zon workers say he continued to suffer and his death, though saddening, came as a relief. “We did not know that it was cancer!” one remarked.

DevSur extends condolences to San A Jang’s family, Radio Zon workers and fans of the station.
