NEW YORK–The Suriname Ambassador to the United Nations, Henry MacDonald, has reached out to the Surinamese Community in New York and pledged to do whatever possible to obtain support from the Surinamese government for the upcoming Sranan Dei (Suriname Day) on August 5th in Roy Wilkins Park in Queens.
“I’m here to serve the community in every way possible”, the Ambassador said, adding that he will try to be a direct link between the Surinamese Community in New York and the Surinamese government.
Members of the newly formed Sranan Dei Committee met with the Ambassador in his office at the UN last Thursday. Issues regarding the Sranan Dei and other topics concerning the Surinamese Community in New York were discussed in an open and candid fashion.
During last years celebrations Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Lackin, on behalf of the Surinamese government, addressed the community and said that he would always be willing to support events like the Sranan Dei. This year’s celebration marks the 36th anniversary of the largest Surinamese event in the Unites States of America.
The “Sranan Dei Committee” members Jerrel Malone, Robert Pinas, Cynthia Pieters, Diana Chung and Wim d’Agrella where present at this meeting. Fiesta Sound’s Michael Sparendam also attended.
