PARAMARIBO, Suriname-- Urging visitors to be alert and not to stray into situations where they may be vulnerable, tourism authorities are assuring that Suriname still is a top destination to be enjoyed.
A communiqué, jointly issued by the Ministry of Transport Communication and Tourism (TCT) and the Foundation Tourism Suriname STS, says that efforts are underway to increase tourists’ awareness, especially during the ongoing holiday season. The appeal came on Wednesday, following the robbery last Saturday night, during which Dutch tourist Hans Janssen was killed.
“We regret the brutal murder of the tourist and convey our condolences to his family and friends. This cowardly act harms our image as a tourist friendly country,” the Ministry says. The communiqué also says that the Ministry is cognizant of its responsibility for securing tourists’ safety, also taking into account that Suriname ranks among the top 10 year-end destinations.
“We expect that tourists will continue to visit and marvel at what our beautiful country has to offer and emphasize that Suriname will remain the country where visitors can peacefully enjoy our atmosphere, the people, wildlife and distinct Surinamese kitchen,” it said.
