World Physical Therapy Day: Fit for Life!
World Physical Therapy day was marked on September 8. In 2008 The World Confederation of Physical Therapy, of which we are a member of since 1978, launched the theme ‘Movement for Health’. This year’s campaign is Fit for Life. The Surinamese Physical Therapy Association, did not have a party but would still like to emphasize that movement, exercise and physical activities are important for each and every one of us.
Physical therapists as exercise experts
As experts in movement and exercise, and with a thorough knowledge of risk factors, pathology and their effects on all systems, physical therapists are the ideal professionals to promote, guide, prescribe and manage exercise activities and efforts. Keep in mind that exercise promotes health, wellbeing and fitness.
Fit for life embraces the important role physical therapists have in promoting activity and health among every section of the population at every stage of their life. So, whether you’re 80 years old or a teenager, physical therapists offer guidance in training programs tailored to your needs and especially if you have problems in functioning properly.
Health promotion
For quite some time the focus has shifted from mainly examination and treatment towards prevention of problems related to posture and movement. It is essential that large groups in society are receiving education and information regarding what exactly it means to keep a healthy lifestyle, which includes daily physical activities such as walking, climbing stairs and gardening.
Key messages
The four key messages under this year’s Fit for life campaign are:
- If you want to keep healthy, keep moving – all through your life
- People who stay active are more likely to keep working, engaging and enjoying life without having to depend on others. They are fit for life
- Inactivity causes disability and contributes to millions of deaths around the world every year. It can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer
- You’re never too young or too old to stay active – just half an hour of moderate exercise (like walking fast) every day can make a real difference
In case you’re dealing with joint- and/or movement problems, contact a physical therapist.
The Surinamese Physical Therapy Association wishes you an active life with plenty of energy.
Stay fit for life!
